Holiday season is here! Whilst some people prefer to go abroad on super swanky holidays, I like nothing more than an adventure holiday where Ember can come too. Two years ago we went to the New Forest and we’re going back again this year, I can’t wait! There are so many benefits of taking your dog on holiday, here are a few of my favourites.
I first found Busters Bisquits on Instagram and was intrigued by the natural ingredients Romana uses to bake the treats. Named in memory of her beloved Buster, these treats are hand baked with love and attention in small batches in her kitchen. I was so excited when Romana offered to send Ember a trial pack of their classic treat and their new Vegan biscuits.
Summer is on it’s way, which usually in the UK means a few hot sunny days followed by clouds and rain, but this year has been a little different with the current heatwave we are enjoying. However, with this sunshine, it’s important to remember how our dogs get affected by the heat. Here are a few tips to help keep your dog cool for the summer.
We’ve had the pleasure of a heatwave these past fews days and while most people have been enjoying sensibly it with their four-legged friends, the same sad stories involving dogs suffering in the heat have been hitting the news. Despite warnings from Dogs Trust and The RSPCA, to name just two, that Dogs Die in Hot Cars, many dogs have been rescued from overheating after being left in hot cars by owners. It’s hard to imagine any dog lover leaving their dog in a car on a hot day but it, unfortunately, happens all too often. The matter of the fact is, it’s never okay to leave your dog in a car – even if it’s only for a minute. So to try to really drive this message home, one of the UK’s top online auto essentials brands, Ignitionline, have created a hard-hitting infographic with some outstanding stats.
You probably know how much Ember and I love Guru, their cold-pressed food is a firm favourite and their complete meal bones are great for travelling. To top of their offerings, they have now created their Venison Sausage Slices containing venison and chopped apple. The venison contained within these ready to eat treats is sustainably sourced in Britan, an important value that Guru stick to for all their products.
Another year, another dog meat festival in Yulin, China, in conjunction with the summer solstice. Around 10-15 thousand dogs and cats are tortured and killed during the festival, while an estimated 10-20 million dogs are slaughtered for meat in China every year. And while China have banned the sale of dog meat, which will come into force a week before the festival, there is no official ban of the actual event which begins this Thursday, the 21st June. In August 2015 Ember picked up a tick on her stomach whilst we were on holiday in the New Forest. Ironically, the same year in April 2015, the Big Tick Project was launched in the New Forest. The Campaign was started to raise awareness about ticks and tick-bourne diseases in the UK, to help pet owners protect their pets and themselves. Each year, veterinary practices collect data and complete a questionnaire to contribute to The Big Tick Project’s Campaign. The information helps to make up a UK threat map, which shows the risk of ticks in local areas. Find the map here, is your local area a high risk? Mine is! You can find out more about The Big Tick Project here. The Big Tick Project are also sponsoring Dog Fest this year which will be taking place in June in Chesire and Hertfordshire, you can get your tickets here!
Spring is the most enjoyable season for walks with Ember, I love being outside when the weather is warmer (hopefully soon, please). However, it is also the worst season and can become uncomfortable for dogs, owners and wildlife alike. Spring synergy with dogs and wildlife isn’t something which comes easy, but I’m fed up of being tarnished with the same brush as other, irresponsible dog owners.
